From their record shop in their home town of Sheffield in England. Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell always sought bigger and better things. Simply selling CDs was not enough; producing electro-play music through machines was a must. Warp was founded in late 1989. Its aim was to apply conceptual identities from other genres of music to dance music. LFO, Autechre, Aphex Twin, The Sabres of Paradise, Seefeel, Plaid, Squarepusher, some of the finest visionaries of the nineties are just releasing their records. The label and store soon became home to artists who would be highly influential in shaping the future of music. The first release (WAP1) was by Forgemasters , a limited 500 copy pressing of "Track With No Name" financed by an Enterprise Allowance grant.
Robert Gordon the influential producer from Sheffield help found Warp Records through which he released his debut (along with Shaun Maher and Winston Hazel) as Forgemasters, "Track with No Name,". Through his A&R and production work, he influenced the sound of the label for its first few releases. He also collaborated with several artists, particularly on the Network label, to shape the "Bass and Bleep" sound that combined the techno sound of Detroit with electro and a new, uniquely British experimental minimalism. Rob Mitchell, Warp's co-founder, died of cancer in 2001, having seen his tiny shop grow into an international label with a spin-off film company and interactive website at the forefront of the independent music market.

Their first release, Track With No Name by Sheffield techno outfit Forgemasters, was distributed in a borrowed car.
